CANADA’S 2022 ICC U19 WORLD CUP GLORY QUEST OFF TO A LOSING START!

Canada battled admirably in Basseterre but were unable to haul
themselves to victory as UAE’s first innings score of 284 for seven
proved enough. Chasing a formidable 285 for victory at an initial
required run rate of 5.68 the Canadians only managed to reach 235
in reply falling some 5o runs shy of their required victory target.
Taking first strike the UAE was at one point reeling at 47-3 in the face of some
initially disciplined Canadian bowling. Punya Mehra, Nilansh Keswani (39)
and Sharafu (37) then helped UAE to recover to 174 for five. Once Mehra
was out for 71, Naseer brought out the big shots, including four sixes and five
fours, to score 73 in just 50 deliveries. He combined with Nilansh Keswani,
who scored 39, in a 69-run sixth-wicket stand as UAE added 92 runs in the last
nine-and-a-half overs before Naseer was the last man out in the final over with
the total at 284.
Mihir Patel’s Canada rallied, however, with the captain leading from the
front as his fine innings of 96 off 105 balls kept them continually in
contention.
Wicketkeeper Anoop Chima (46) and lower-order batter
Kairav Sharma (43) also offered resistance but only one
other batter crossing double digits, Two wickets each for
Keswani, Sharafu, Adhitya Shetty and Jash Giyanani
helped bowl Canada out for 235 to complete hardfought
49-run victory.
